Why a school in Las Terrenas?
Our Story began when a group of us who live in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, were delivering food to a Haitian community and discovered the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions of the schools they were resigned to attend.
We also realized that there are many other kids who would like to attend school, but cannot for several reasons, one being lack of space in existing schools.
Marilyn, the founder of Right to Learn Global Literacy Project, visited our town and identified the same problems. Through this common concern, we got together and started a discussion on how we could impact the plight of these kids.
We held an informational meeting with other people in the community with a heart for these kids and their plight. The result of this meeting, was a determination to start a new school in the community to provide these children with proper education, nutrition, and basic health services.
A school committee was formed which meets every week to discuss and further our goal. The first objective was to find a location for our school. Some of us spent the next couple weeks walking through the target neighborhoods looking for a suitable structure.
Others worked on developing startup and operating budgets for our school. We were elated to find a building which had been used as a school and suits our needs perfectly. We have a signed contract to rent this building and are now working on raising the funds to make our dream for these kids a reality.
Our plan is to open our school with two classrooms this fall and expand the number of classrooms as funding becomes available.
